New concrete mix standards raise concerns

Residents in the Downriver communities have expressed their concerns over new concrete that shows signs of “pitting and scaling” within a year of pour. City engineers assure local residents that this is strictly a “cosmetic” issue, not a structural issue. I have voiced my concerns to our representatives in emails dated 4/16/2025. See the detailed email below:

Good Afternoon,

I am writing to share a concern that myself and many of our constituents’ share. The concrete mix that was used to pave many of our local and major streets is subpar. The mix is scaling and breaking down within a year of pour. The structure integrity is in question, but most certainly the cosmetic integrity is absolutely unacceptable. This issue seemed to be addressed a recent change was made to the standards of concrete mix in 2024/2025 from 3500psi to 4000psi. The cities of Rockwood, Allen Park, Riverview, Flat rock and Grosse Ille have many locations showcasing the new 400psi S1 mix. These new areas are showing signs of major scaling and have NOT been through more than one winter in Michigan. This is a deep concern and the standards of concrete mix in Michigan must be addressed. Let’s demand more for our residents. Let’s demand high quality concrete mix and accountability for those who allowed the nonsense of poor standards to continue. Thank you.

This is a hot topic downriver as the trend shows on Facebook and within council meetings. I have 50+ pictures of scaling and putting concrete work that was poured within a year. I have interviewed many residents and would love to collaborate with you for change.
